Smith: 9/11 Victims Deserve a Monument...Not a Mosque

Justin O. Smith writes from Murfreesboro, TN.:

The ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center has arrived. This should be a time of reflection for all Americans. In honoring the 2,919 killed in the single most destructive assault on U.S. soil, by the growing Islamic jihadist movement, and the ultimate sacrifice of the 4,434 soldiers in both Afghanistan and Iraq , our nation must build a monumental memorial at Ground Zero. Americans must not ever forget the treachery that occurred on this day and the ignoble, inglorious, reprehensible and abhorrent actions of millions of Muslims across the globe, as they cheered and celebrated the deaths of our loved ones. Vow for the future to truly never forget this moment in history.

Many of us remember the precise moment the reports of jetliners slamming into both towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) and the Pentagon went across the airwaves. We know excatly where we were and what we were doing.

At 8:46 am American Airlines Flight 11 impacted the north side of the North Tower of the WTC between the 94th and 98th floors. Shortly afterwards at 9:02 am, United Airlines Flight 175 slammed into the south side of the South Tower between the 78th and 84th floors at over 500 mph. At 9:37 am American Airlines Flight 77 impacted the western side of the Pentagon. Between 8:47 am and 10:29 am, all America watched helplessly, as many trapped by smoke and fire in the upper floors of the WTC towers chose to jump to their deaths rather than be burned alive. At 9:59 am the South Tower of the WTC collapsed, and twenty-nine minutes later the North Tower followed. Never forget!

Never forget the hot tears of fear, frustration, anger and extreme sorrow and grief that streamed down the faces of millions of Americans. Many of us feared that more lives were soon to be lost or that some of our loved ones may have perished as the towers were levelled. Frustration was born from not being able to be of immediate help. Watching our fellow Americans die, in such a horrific fashion due to a heinous, despicable and cowardly act, provoked a fury that most of us had never heretofore experienced. Torrential grief and sorrow came with this day's misery.

Never forget that nine years later our elected officials have not yet seen fit to build a memorial at Ground Zero in honor of the victims of 9/11. Initially one can rationalize this oversight through two wars being waged at once and our ongoing economic "crisis." This no longer rings true as we witness the Obama Administration's misuse of so-called "stimulus" money, record deficit spending, and a willingness to divert funds to their political allies, as even Hamas was recently given $400 million; any group that attacks America's cultural norms and principles, including Imam Feisal Rauf and his radical Islamic cohorts, has an excellent chance of receiving financing from Obama.

Bizarre and outrageous decisions are being made by the U.S. State Department and P.J. Crowley as they send Feisal Rauf to represent U.S. interests in the Middle East, which as been widely reported in Arab newspapers as a thinly disguised fundraising trip at the U.S. taxpayers' expense; it is ludicrous that they present Rauf as the voice of Islamic moderation in America. Rauf is the product of a long-term association with the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and Hamas. Bear in mind that al-Qaeda also sprang from the MB. Rauf's anti-American and pro-jihadist rhetoric speaks for itself. In 2005 Rauf stated, "the U.S. has more Muslim blood on its hands than al-Qaeda has on its hands of innocent non-Muslims."

Ignoring the propriety of placing a mosque near the worse Islamic terrorist attack on U.S. soil, Pres. Obama, Mayor Bloomberg, the ACLU, and Hamas and the Taliban (enemies of the United States) have all stated their eager advocacy and desire to facilitate the construction of Imam Rauf's fifteen story mosque, scheduled to open on 9/11 of next year, even though 67% of all Americans oppose this mosque at Ground Zero. It has also been suggested that federal tax-exempt bonds may be granted in order to aid the construction of the Ground Zero mosque; remember that Mayor Bloomberg and New York City 's commission and comptroller have steadfastly impeded and blocked the building permit of the previously existing Greek Orthodox church that was destroyed by the collapsing WTC. This exemplifies the double standard and hypocrisy of the leadership in the U.S. today. Any other time the ACLU would be screaming "separation of church and state." In this political arena religious tolerance does not extend to Christianity!

Mayor Bloomberg has invested heavily in Dubai, and he has financial deals pending that will double his revenues by 2014. The publicity from his support of this mosque is certain to increase the potential for succesful deals in the Middle East. This represents a huge conflict of interest between Bloomberg's business deals and his duties as mayor.

One of the few and most outspoken Muslim voices opposing the mosque at Ground Zero belongs to a Canadian woman. Raheel Raza is a board member of the Muslim Canadian Congress, and she has called for the reform of Islam through the removal of the Hadith (violent words and actions attributed to Mohammed). Raza states, "many Muslims suspect that the idea behind the Ground Zero mosque is meant to be a deliberate provocation, to thumb our nose at the 'infidel'.....We believe this proposal has been made in bad faith." Many Muslims naturally view this mosque as a conquest mosque; its original name of "Cordoba House" refers to the 8th century Islamic conquest of Spain in which churches were methodically converted to mosques.

Our nation is supposedly broke, and yet, the U.S. recently sent $100 million to Tanzania to build a mosque. Several more billions of taxpayers' dollars have been appropriated by the Obama Administration for churches and mosques in other nations such as the Saladin mosque in Cairo. If our government was spending this money on a Baptist church in Murfreesboro, TN., the Democrats/progressives and the ACLU, once again, would be incensed and waving U.S. Supreme Court precedents and "separation of church and state" in everyone's face. Can anyone explain this, and where is the outrage from the Democrats, the far left progressives and the ACLU now?

The tallest building in the world, the Empire State Building, was built in eighteen months at the height of the Depression. Between the 1930s and the 1950s, America's "can do" attitude would not have allowed a seven story hole to sit there for nearly a decade. The fact that in the 21st century we have not yet built a memorial at Ground Zero, in order to honor our dead and mark the moment in history, so we never forget, speaks volumes about the state of affairs in America and the lack of moral character and clarity of mind exhibited by our leaders in Washington, DC, New York state and New York city. In order to redeem our nation and honor the memory of the victims of 9/11, we must stop the mosque at Ground Zero, and we must build a fitting monument to their ultimate sacrifice, and we must never...never forget!

Everything he says is so true...and so depressing.

I could never have imagined on 912 that nearly a decade later the site  has still not been rebuilt.

The reconstruction plans call for only large office tower.

The original Trade Centre had two large office towers and both were built in the space of only six years ( '66 to '72)

America is adrift.
